Do you have an RSS file for syndication?

Yes. You can access our RSS file at http://keepersoflists.org/keepers.rss
This file is updated nightly and also includes a search field.

I searched for a common word and got not hits! What gives?

We use a natural language search to search the titles of lists. The intent of a natural language search is to try and find applicable lists. If you search for 'Things' you might get dozens of lists which doesn't really help much. So if you searched for a common word and got no hits, try a more detailed search phrase.

As a rule, if a word appears in > 30% of list titles, it is ignored.

Why does a list item say 'Voted' next to it?
Why do I have to be logged in to vote?

The system tracks which items a user has voted for to ensure users can only vote for an item once. Otherwise a user could vote numerous times for a single item which would take away from the item rankings which are intended to be an indication of what viewers thought of a specific item.

Why does a list item say 'Your Item' next to it?

Users cannot vote for items they submit. This also helps you see which items you submitted to a list and where they rank. Note that this information is kept private and is only displayed to you when you are logged in. Nicknames may be associated with lists, but this is optional in your profile.

Why do you have ads on this site?

We built this site because we thought it was a neat concept and wanted others to be able to enjoy it. However, it does cost money to run this site - as the site grows in popularity, the bandwidth costs go up. We need the ads to offset the bandwidth costs and the costs of additional servers to handle the traffic load.

Why do you ask for personal info in profiles?

The personal information in a user's profile is 100% optional. All you are required to provide is an email address (which is never shared) and password. However, if we can provide advertisers with statistical information about our viewers, we receive higher ad revenue. All supplied information is kept private and is only used to generate anonymous statistics like "Users from State X clicked on this ad Y times".

Why do I have to be logged in to add lists and items?

There are a number of reasons. Lists are reviewed before they are published and the only way to let you know when a list was accepted or rejected is to know who submitted it.

We want this site to be enjoyed by a broad audience. There are people out there who enjoy submitting vulgar and pointless things which add no value. By requiring users to be logged in, we hope to reduce the pointless submissions from anonymous users.
Users who abuse their privleges will have their accounts terminated.

This site is cool - what runs it?

The Keepers are firm believers in Open Source Software. This site runs on RedHat Linux running Apache for the web services and MySQL for the database backend. The code is written in PHP v4.

I know I had more rejected lists - but they disappeared

To save database space, rejected lists are purged after 2 weeks. You are welcome to delete them before that if you like. Just go to My Lists and click Remove.

How does the site remember who I am?

This website uses cookies, stored in your browser, to keep track of who you are. This means you won't have to login everytime you visit our site. These cookies expire if you don't visit Keepers in 30 days which means you will have to log in again.

What does 'Updated!' mean for a list?

When you see Updated! next to a list title, it means that new list items have been recently added to that list. The default is items added within the past day, however registered users can change that threshold in their profile so you can easily have Keepers indicate lists with items added in the past week or month. Voting on a list will NOT cause Updated! to be displayed

My Password isn't working. What can I do?

The first thing to do is insure you've entered the correct password for the site, making sure you don't have Caps-Lock on - since your password is case sensitive. If that isn't the source of the problem, then - with your email address entered in the login field - click the button marked 'Forgot Password' and you will recieve an email at the address you used in your registration, with all of your account information so you'll be able to login once again. If you continue to have difficulty with your account, please send email to support@keepersoflists.org.
